Picture this:
It’s just another evening at home. Your child is doing their homework, frustration etched on their face.
The problem is their handwriting
Since they started Year 7, their neat handwriting has vanished. It was replaced by hurried scribbles that were almost impossible to read. You’ve dropped hints. You suggested they take more care. But, over time, their handwriting stays the same or gets worse.
The school is not helping
They don’t give enough chances to practice and improve. You’ve searched the internet high and low. But, all you find are boring resources that your child wouldn’t touch.
You’re worried about the future
If this keeps up, what’s going to happen when they reach Year 9, or when they’re doing their GCSEs and beyond?
You’re on the hunt for a solution
You want something that can fit into your life. Most importantly, it’s something they’ll enjoy. All you’re looking for is a solution that can bring about real, lasting change. Why is that so tricky to find?
Wouldn't it be great if there was an easy way to improve handwriting? And, it didn't end with the answer "I will type it"?
Just like you… I couldn’t find anything
My students needed a way to practice their handwriting at home. Lessons weren’t the answer for some; they needed consistent practice. I searched online and checked local stores, reaching out to other OT friends for advice. There was nothing.
The workbooks available were too embarrassingly young for teenagers. They were also repetitive or lacked any helpful content.
I decided if I couldn’t find the right resource, I’d make it myself. I knew what interested my students – quirky yet true facts – so that’s where I began. In January 2023, I started making monthly workbooks. They merged historical events with handwriting practice.
But it didn’t stop there. Over a year, with input from my students and trials in three schools, the workbook evolved. Puzzles, review sections and tips on how to improve were added. It wasn’t just a workbook anymore; it was turning into something bigger and better.
Today, the club provides a starter kit and monthly resource pack. It also has bimonthly Zoom calls with extra teaching. It has ‘Feedback Friday’ videos where an occupational therapist guides student work reviews.
It’s a journey that’s taken time and a lot of listening, but it’s been crucial to get it right.
I’ve witnessed my students grow and progress. They’ve stuck with it, not out of obligation but because they genuinely enjoy it. They’ve shared how much their handwriting has improved.
We’ve even made the club part of the resources for students doing their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award.
Now, I’m thrilled to offer this to you, so your child can also reap its benefits.
What is the handwriting club?
