Looking for a speaker at your next Inset training event?
Helping a child learn to write is not always easy but it can be fun. My talks combine the latest handwriting research with practical fun activities, making your training day a success. (Read my testimonials below to see what others say)
For the last 4 years, I’ve spoken at the TES Special Educational Needs Show.
I know that people leave energised and inspired.
Motor learning theory supports the use of repeatedly doing the same thing over and over again until it becomes a habit. However, there are ways in which we can teach handwriting to children without it being monotonous. Sometimes they do not even have to pick up a pencil!
As a children’s occupational therapist my training looks at handwriting from a physical health perspective.
It may even make you question whether some of the handwriting targets set in schools are achievable.
My training will show you how early childhood development provides children with the muscle strength to be able to write. Furthermore, they will illustrate to you how technology-based games are changing this generation of writers. Lastly, I’ll reveal to you my occupational therapy tricks to help a child learn to write.

“Sheilagh has made the whole process so easy right from the start. She is very professional and has always offered very timely and effective support from booking the training day to receiving online support through her website. All of our staff came out of the training day feeling enthusiastic and confident with the knowledge they had acquired during the day. There were lots of hands-on practical activities, and easy to make resources and ideas. She is very knowledgeable and links her ideas and activities to proven research. We have really enjoyed working with her and would highly recommend her.” Emma Hargreaves, SENCO, Penn Wood Nursery and Primary School. January 2017.
“I feel more confident to help or support a child in handwriting or literacy by this training” Sidra Ahmed, Inset training at Penn Wood Nursery and Primary School, Slough. January 2017
“I’ve learned a lot of new stuff on handwriting techniques that I can apply…I will take every bit of information away from this and apply it”. Aishah Ali, Inset training at Penn Wood Nursery and Primary School, Slough. January 2017
“This training has made a huge difference to my understanding of motor skills and development, and how to support it in class”. Susan Allwright, Inset training at Penn Wood Nursery and Primary School, Slough. January 2017
“I was at your talk at the show and of all the seminars (and I went to eight) yours was the best in terms of content and presentation. Keep up the wonderful enthusiasm for such an important part of a child’s education that causes so much stress for many of our children.” Brid Luetkemeier, Munich, Germany, TES SEN Show November 2016
“I’ve been on several courses including the NHS 5-day handwriting course (which technically makes me a handwriting tutor). But this was the first by an OT. The emphasis seemed a lot more practical, child-friendly and based on a developmental approach rather than educational. I particularly liked the balance between play and exercise. I just felt it was stuff I had been thinking was the right approach. So it was reassuring to realise I am on the right track”. Jenny Aldington, UK, TES SEN Show November 2016
- £425 – 1/2 day
- £750 – whole day
