He may be holding his pen tighter as he is concentrating on getting his thoughts down onto the paper. I would get him to try different pen and pencil styles. There are some really good ergonomically styled pencils that can reduce the need to grip so tightly. If he is writing in pen, I would avoid using a biro as this needs more muscle pressure placed not eh paper to push the ink out. He may find a rollerball or fountain pen more comfortable.
