How do we get started?
1. Book and pay
Choose your occupational therapist. Then, book a time slot. Complete the payment and keep a lookout for our welcome email. This has the link to book more lessons.
2. Do the pre-lesson work before the 1st lesson
Ask your child to do our pre-first lesson worksheets. Record a video of your child’s writing. Focus on their pencil grip and sitting posture. Book all future lessons. This helps us prepare for their lesson.
3. Follow these tips for during the lessons
Ensure they have a quiet space with a table to write on. They’ll need a pen or pencil and lined paper. Charge your device fully. Connect to a stable internet connection. Position the device so your child can easily write and show their work to the camera.
4. Receive feedback
Be there at the end of the 45 minute lesson. You will get feedback and progress updates from your child’s OT. Hear what homework, if any, has been set.

Frequently asked questions about 1 to handwriting lessons
In secondary school, writing is about having a clear and fast style. Being able to have the skills to draw detailed diagrams and organise the work on the page. There are also subject-specific skills. For example, writing scientific formulas. They also have to get used to each teacher’s expectations. We believe it’s important to use your child’s current handwriting style. Promoting their strengths. Teaching them new ways to write clearly. This is not the time to be teaching them to write in a completely new style.
Yes, we can help your child improve their handwriting speed. This will help them with exams and note-taking in class. We know efficiency and legibility are important. This is especially true during timed tests.
But before we can speed up, we need good handwriting. We can only speed up when we have muscle memory for forming letters. This includes sizing and spacing. First comes legibility, then comes speed. Our 1:1 handwriting lessons will cover all of these skills.
We know many of our students have struggled with handwriting for a while. They often think they can never achieve it. We use a positive approach. It focuses on strengths and progress. It does not focus on perfection. Criticism never helps motivate anyone. We also know that for many, this is their last attempt at improving their writing.
The methods in our 1 to 1 handwriting lessons help students improve right away. These improvements boost their confidence and motivation.
We like to think that we make all the 1:1 handwriting lessons enjoyable. Our unique selling point is we add fun games to handwriting instruction. We tailor our activities around what your child will enjoy learning or doing. Whether that be weird but true facts, creative writing or real life events. We know that if we capture interest, we capture motivation. This is when the best type of learning happens.
We also use our occupational therapy skills. Teaching handwriting by breaking it into doable steps. The steps should never overwhelm or confuse a student.
We work closely with students to use their new skills in their schoolwork. We focus on developing muscle memory and habits. We do this through consistent practice.
Our ‘homework’ assignments might start as fun games. But, we quickly shift to using our strategies on real school homework. We aim to help them develop strategies for taking good notes at school. We also give tips for keeping handwriting readable in exams.
This is really difficult to say. Research says it takes 66 days to change a habit. Some older students have ingrained habits. They find it harder to make changes. For others, it all clicks into place. At about lesson 3 or 4, we will guide you into knowing if your child is making the progress expected. Often the physical act of writing is easy. The problem comes when we think about what to write at the pace expected at school. That’s when we realise more practice is needed.
We do not stipulate that you have to have a 1:1 handwriting lesson at a particular time or day every week. During term time, weekly or fortnightly works well. In the school holidays, this can be increased to bi-weekly. For this age group, it’s about finding the time and fitting it around after-school clubs. Weekly is best if you can manage this.
At the time of booking, you can choose the frequency using our online calendar. You can change the lesson time yourself at any time. We ask that all lessons be taken within 6 months of payment.
Yes, we see children aged between 6 to 11 years for online lessons. There is a different page for this age. That is because we use a different teaching approach. It has more game based activities.ย
Yes, our lessons will help your child. Their work will be readable to an examiner. But, they will need time to put this advice in place. It is best to think of lessons taking place 6 to 8 months before their exams.
